We were instructed by our teachers to hide under our school desks in the event of an nuclear attack and would have air raid drill for this. These were the same people who taught us everything else we know.
Girls were raised to be good little housewives and mothers - Independence and self sufficiency was not encouraged. A smart girl went to college to meet a man that would get a higher paying job to support her.
Men were the main income and leaders of the household and nation. Boys were raised to fill those rolls.
Segregation was enforced and perfectly legal, even when the enforcement used illegal force.

It was great growing up in the 50s. Trouble is, it produced the 60s.
