It basically means how did improvements in personal hygiene (such as toothpaste, shampoo, etc) improve a person's daily life. With better hygiene, people could live longer, had fewer diseases, etc.

What have we changed by building buildings and roads etc. (physical environment i assume) and improving hygiene since 100 years ago? For example - perfume has made woman more desirable with it's growth in the past century. You could even say that perfume was a figure head for the overall woman persona we so love today. In general I view woman as soft, loving, romantic, intimate, sappy, are that..."girly" stuff, as I would assume almost everyone else agrees. That is because woman have adapted to things that define them as a whole and simply smelling good is one of them.

well guess they found out soap was for cleaning and not just for making bubbles with..plus the rate at which some disease were spread came down due to cleaning with bleach etc
