I would start off with a 5 gallon tank for a betta (they can live up to 8 years with proper care and habitat), which is filtered and you will need to buy a heater as well and live plants
you also need to cycle your tank first before getting a fish
http://fishlesscycling.com/articles.html
Once your tank is cycled, you can buy your betta
you can also keep snails in there and up to 5 neon tetras
The temperature needs to be at 76-82 degrees
you will need to do 25% partial waterchanges with a gravel siphon weekly
Feed him twice a day, with either pellets or frozen blood worms, exchange his food daily, the neons will eat flake food, put only in as much as they will eat in under 5 min
Also leave out the feedings once a week, that will prevent him from getting constipatet
Leave on the light for 10-12 hours during the day and turn it off for 12-14 hours at night, a timer can be helpful
don't overfeed your fish
Never put your tank near a window, or you will have a problem with green algae
if you want to go with a goldfish, you will need at least a 10 gallon tank for 1, which will live up to 15-25 years with proper care
here is a basic caresheet for a goldfish

Hope that helps
Good luck

Goldfish are amongst the hardiest of all fish which, no doubt, contributes to their popularity. The main reason why they are the easiest fish to keep is because they are coldwater fish and don't require the water to be heated.
Many people think that there is only one type of goldfish and that's the little standard gold coloured fish, but there is also a large range of fancy goldfish including Veiltails, Orandas, and Moors. These all look very pretty.
I have found fancy goldfish, especially the fantails and other varieties with little bodies, to be more of a problem than the standard ones. This is because there organs are more squished up and they are more prone to getting swimbladder problems.
Hope this helps you decide what you want...
Good luck!

a goldfish is pretty easy 2 take care of.and little frogs live a long time too.and those really tiny ones that look like goldfish and freak out when you put your finger on the tank are easy to take care of too.tip:if you get a tiny white catfish-like fish,it might get stuck in the air tube and will die.mine did this twice and died the second time.just remember to feed it and not to overfeed it.i hav a hamster.and will get a snake.go here for care stuff: http://www.firsttankguide.net/

Get an oscar. Pet stores always have them. They usuallly sell them when their very small like one inch and they grow real fast, soon you will need a 40 gallon tank to hold one. But they are very harty fish, and they eat other fish. They come n different colors my favorite because I have one is the albino orange and white, very beautiful creature.
