Don't pick obvious topics like abortion, gay marriage, gun control, stem cell research or immigration. Hot button issues like these have been discussed sooo much that you know your professor has read and heard endless amounts of stuff on the topic, and therefore your paper, however well written, is not likely to WOW him or her.
I find the mental health route fascinating. A couple ideas:
Positive Psychology: The field of examining what makes people mentally strong and happy rather than weak and mentally ill.
Wilderness Therapy for adolescents: Using adventure experiences to change problematic behavior in young people (consider how living out in nature and doing active therapy might work better than sitting in a stuffy office with a psychologist)
Prescription medications: Are we over-medicating our population? Can we trust research? Are all these new medications safe? (consider examining lawsuits against negligent companies whose meds resulted in illness and death)
Sedentary lifestyles: the possible effects of spending all our time behind a computer, TV or video game system (consider the increasing # of kids with ADHD, childhood obesity, etc.)

How about the best of both worlds? A suggestion would be,
'The Interpretation of Dreams and its Implication on Social Interactions'
Of course it requires a bit more work than your regular 101 paper but then it can be very rewarding grade-wise!
Hope it works out!

Maybe on animal rights activism? You can find a lot of information about that online. Animals are treated pretty badly, and it's always being covered up. You can probably find some pretty good stories to write about. Maybe focus on one case in particular that has been resolved. Vivisection is a big issue right now, has been for years.
