Why do people try to argue and have valid points when they invalidate their points because they can't spell correctly?
Does that bother anyone else?! Every time I try to read an argument or opinion on this site I cringe when I find spelling mistakes, which are fairly common. I honestly don't understand how you can hope to present a good argument when you can't spell correctly.
Someone else has to share that same opinion.

I said nothing about people in other countries that learn English but can't spell it or write correctly. I admire them because they learned my language so I can't say anything bad about them. That's like when I spell or mess up grammar in Spanish. Even though I've had 6 years of it and can write very well, I still make mistakes.
I am talking about native English speakers in the US or other English speaking countries.

Yeah seriously, I can understand one or two typos, but some people are just ridiculous, you can barely understand what they write. A lot of that results from poor typing skills or typing too fast. Also keep in mind that some of these people are rather young teenagers still learning how to spell.

Honestly, I try to look past spelling mistakes and/or typos. I belive a person can still present a valid point, even if they do spell like a 2nd-grader (okay, maybe I cringe a little) Some people just can NOT spell. My boyfriend sometimes has to ask me how to spell the simplest words, such as tear, done, etc. I feel a little sorry for him. He just was not blessed with the gift of good spelling (or good grammar for that matter.) I don't think that bad spelling always indicates a weaker argument, though.

Bad spelling doesn't always invalidate the argument, I can see how bad spelling is hard to handle but I feel it's low if that's the only thing you can see as opposed to the message or lack of which the person has tried to communicate - I can't help thinking if someones presented a coherent argument and all that others focus on is spelling that it shows you can't conter the argument

Does this mean that spelling is main concept here then the correct presentation in argument? If someone can not spell correctly will not have right to argue in your court room?
Do you know, those who play safe can not learn.
Do you know mistakes are the launching pad of wisdom.
Do you know we learn by mistakes.
I knew many Native English teachers here in Japan who can not write correct grammar. But they are English teacher.
Yahoo Answer is a place to express what ever we want to ask or answer by following community guidelines.
I request you, please do not judge people's ability by spelling try to find good points in their mistakes. If possible you should correct if you are good at English.

I totally agree with you!!! This site even provides a tool for them - 'check spelling' and they don't use it. I feel a lot of them are really young and use text messaging all of the time so they come on here and do the same. I'd sure hate to be their teacher trying to read a term paper from them.....

I most certainly agree with your opinion! I have friends that write to each other in their e-mails and utilize such terms as:
u all or lol (laugh out loud), etc. I have asked them questions as to why they can not write in more educated terms and grammar / syntax? Their response is generally, well that is the way that people write in "cyberspace".
My personal opinion is that when an individual begins to write in this particular style, they begin to converse in the same manner. What effort does it take to "correctly" respond to someone with the use of proper grammar vs. "lingo". I tend to be annoyed with people who answer an e-mail with this type of language. It is my belief that they tend to begin to speak with this type of dialect in their daily lives, as well.

If you cannot spell correctly you cannot present a sound argument as it could mean something else.

I agree with what you have to say. It's as if it's 'cool' to misspell! I am an ELT and find this annoying habit in my students. When an error is pointed out, they just shrug and seem to say , 'Big Deal!!!" No amount of coaxing will make them take that effort to check their spellings!
Blame it on 'spell check'..., ambience at homes...,lack of patience...???

corect! corrrect speling is a great factor in presenting an arguement, and rong speling is wrong! it is not acceptable and yet people tolerate it! but then why dont yu try to luk at the brightt side of thiis? commmunication si something arbitrary, the purposse of communication is for you to undersstand the mesage, if you get the message, den there everything folllows, you dont have to be perffect in spellling, but as llong as tha mesage or the conceptt of wat you are trying to communnicate is understoood, that is what matterrs.
hope yu got the idea.. ^_^
