Phillp Pullman
His Dark Materials was masterfully put together and the final of the trilogy The Amber Spyglass is still one of my favorites!

Other-Stephen Baxter
Arguably the greatest modern science fiction writer, Manifold Time, Manifold Space have no equal. He has a doctorates from Cambridge in mathematics and aerospace enginering, so his ideas are as pratical as they are amazing.

What is your favortie author?

That's a great list to choose from....but I choose "other".I'll give you two - John Irving and Wilbur Smith (alphabetically...)
John Irving is irony, humor, reality, drama and ambivolence. Definately an author you can pick from since he has several. Try The Fourth Hand or A Prayer for Owen Meany.
Wilbur Smith is an amazing epic writer. He TAKES you THERE. His works are so descriptive that you just HAVE to read them. Start with River God, thenThe Seventh Scroll, and then Warlock. The last is The Quest, and I haven't even read that yet but as soon as I can find it, I WILL!!!!

Stephen King

THE STAND -Extended Version-

The Stand has so many deep meanings, great characters, action and a storyline that keeps getting more fresh as you read. Its not often a 1200 page book gets my full attention. Stephen also has the ability to weave an unsettling or interesting/inspiring story out of virtually any good or bad idea and make it great.

I have to say Jane Austen's Pride and Prejudice.

I have read it more times than I can count.

I also love the movie made by A&E with Colin Firth.

The acting and the cast choice makes it a must see over and over.

You also need to go into the web sites and read about her.

Thanks for the question.

#1- I found the Harry Potter series to be appealing to both adults and children. I like the way she had the characters evolve as they got older.

#5- I enjoy her writing both as NR and JD Robb. As NR, I like her female protagonists. They usually have a strength of character that I find appealing. I like the ..In Death series she writes as Robb. They are futuristic, but you can believe that's were technology will be in 50 years. Her main characters are just so varied in their personalities, that I love the way they mesh together.

I also really enjoy Laurell K. Hamilton. I love her Anita Blake series, I prefer the first 3 in the Merry Gentry, series to the rest of the series. I like the way she takes our world, and writes of it as it is, but with the addition of preternatural beings as fact. You have Vampires and various Were-creatures predominant in Anita's world, working side by side with us humans in some cases. In Merry's world, you have the Sidhe and other creatures of Faerie, and they sure aren't anything like Tinkerbell or Santa's Helpers.

I will go off the list with other ... William Faulkner ... As I Lay Dying or The Sound and the Fury. Because Faulkner is one of the few writers who had the ability to literally reach right out of the book and grab you and pull you into the story and keep you there until he was ready to let you go. His stream of consciousness writing was revolutionary and brilliant. With the possible exception of Orwell and Steinbeck - everyone else on your list pales compared to Faulkner. They are lightweights. Their names don't even belong on the same list with Faulkner, Steinbeck and Orwell.

Oh yes, then of course my very favorite author is ... me! Pax - C

Of the ones you listed, definitely Orwell. He did such amazing stories you almost forget you're learning a lesson. "Animal Farm," though cliche, is still my favorite, though I also really like his essay, "Shooting an Elephant."

However, Dee Henderson is my overall favorite author. Also an amazing story teller, so able to keep you on the edge of your seat.
