Or would that dubious honor go to the early years of SATURDAY NIGHT LIVE?

I nominate the Gong Show based on all the backstories involving legendary eccentric Producer and Host Chuck Barris, his self-admited stories of drug abuse, the occasional wild topless antics and many bleeped out cursings of panelist Jaye P. Morgan, and the seeming off-the-cuff unscripted mayhem that seemed to occur quite often.

The the backstory about the early days of SNL was pretty rich as well.

Do any other shows come close?

have you ever watched "The Match Game"? If there wasn't alcohol provided for those celebrities, along with all kinds of illegal substances, I'll be a monkey's uncle!

The Gong Show takes the prize. Chuck Barris really knew what people wanted. These people were real people acting like real people. The best thing is when you were high on pot you laughed so hard and always wanted more. We need another Gong Show but they need to find a person that is just like Barris but also thier own person if you know what I mean. It would be a hit again in no time.

I'll second the nomination for The Gong Show!

I'll also offer a bid for a show called Laugh In which was also a celebration of "blitzed humor."

But, certainly the Gong Show was nuts. Kinda like the Jerry Springer show with talent, it was so off-beat and surprising that it was hard to resist.

I definitely agree with the Gong Show. After hearing about Chuck Barris' so-called real life it just creeped me out a little. Plus, he used to sweat alot on the set and sometimes gong people prematurely. What about MARY HARTMAN? That show was kinda of weird because someone used to call her name over and over "MARY HARTMAN, MARY HARTMAN?" Also, it always seemed to be dark in the window. The outside scenery was always dark and it seemed to drag on and on. The lady who played Mary Hartman used to look like a crazy sheep-dog. Does anyone remember that show?

I remember some of the old "Tonite" shows with Johnny Carson had some guest stars that were pretty tipsy.
The Dean Martin "Roasts" were also pretty wild.
