ag86 is an idiot. I suspect there is way, way too much salt in that tank! That in itself won't cause fin rot, to my knowledge, but it isn't good. I don't use salt in my Betta tanks. I have never heard anything bad about Bettafix, although I have never used it. Melafix is the one that is reportedly toxic to Bettas. There are a lot of good medications to treat this. I would go to your local fish store, not some place like Petsmart, but a real fish specialty place. Ask them what they recommend. The good ones know fish, and know what to do for them. I have even taken my fish in for a diagnosis when I didn't know for sure what was wrong! You could also take a water sample and ask them to check the salinity for you. I'm sorry you are having this problem. It sounds like you pretty much know what you're doing. Kudos for that! Good luck with him!

• Unseasoned salt has an infinite shelf life. Seasoned salts should be kept tightly capped and used within one year.
• Humidity and moisture will cause salt to clump and stick together. Add about ten grains of raw rice to the shaker to absorb the moisture and keep the salt flowing freely.

No. Salt does not expire.

In the days before refrigeration, food was stored in salt or brine (salt water) to make the food last longer.

Go lick the Salt Flats in Utah and find out.

No, I don't think it does. Now if you got it wet once, that might be another story.

no it doesnt expire, but if you put white rice in your salt shaker it will keep it from getting moist, cuz it will if you have it where it gets to warm like above a stove

I don't think so. It can, after years and years, lose some of its flavor. And then I guess maybe you could say it's no good. Unless you like weak salt maybe!?
