in california from what i have been told there is no such thing as common law... other states all have their own rules for that... try googling that topic and see what it says..
these states recognize common law
Alabama
Colorado
District of Columbia
Georgia (if created before 1/1/97)
Idaho (if created before 1/1/96)
Iowa
Kansas
Montana
New Hampshire (for inheritance purposes only)
Ohio (if created before 10/10/91)
Oklahoma
Pennsylvania

It depends where you live. In Canada, it is six months before a couple should list married on tax forms, government loans, insurance etc. Of course, if you don't claim common law status for whatever reason, you don't have to worry about it. It's not like they're going to sent inspectors making sure that you're not having sex with your room mate!

It really depends on what state u live in..
In Texas it is 7 seven years.. so check with ur Justice of the Peace office..
also... if u are introduced as man and wife
ck into a motel as man and wife ..
and live together and he supports u... u are common law...
has to be all 3...

Common law marriage does not apply any more. It use to be that if you lived with someone for seven years then you were legally married. That law no longer applies for obvious reasons.

it depends on certain states and the fact is i am sure that you have to go and file down in court for this also. you can' just say oh i am common law now.
