Ever since 6th grade, I've been stuttering on the letter S. For example, Imagine a classroom and we're reading out of the textbook. The teacher calls on students every paragraph or so. My nervousness get's really high and my heart starts beating fast. When I'm called on, I read the paragraph, and sometimes I stutter on words that begin with an S, like "some, such, sing, something, solo, star, symphony, special" etc. I usually stutter when the S word begins a new sentence. Sometimes I intentionally just drop my pencil and grab it, then skip the S word or replace it like I misread it, even though I didn't. So, is there anyway to help me stop stuttering those S's? Please help :) By the way, I'm gonna be a freshman. First day of school TOMORROW :( I'm so excited/nervous I can't sleep, haha.

Try the book "Self Therapy for the Stutterer" published by The Stuttering Foundation of America and available in their estore at www.stutteringhelp.org for $3 plus shipping. Working through the steps in it helped my uncles and cousins who stuttered. The book is available at many public libraries, too.

Take a deep breath and then speak. Try it out. It works...and believe me, confidence is the key. You must have felt it at times that you stutter less when you are confident about something or may be in a casual setting where you have nothing to lose. Its only when you are under pressure, these things surface out. So, keep your calm, take a deep breath and shoot! You'll be fine

Praaactice!! I know it may sound kind of weird but just go in your room and think of any possible word starting with an S. Or just say the word S. Once you get more usto it..you'll get the hang of it and shouldnt be stuttering too much longer

alex,

Does the stuttering only happen if you are nervous or you stutter in general. If it happens due to stress then try to meditate, or train your mind to ignore everyone around you. Find a way to calm you mind and you will tend not to stutter.

If you stutter in general then try speech therapy.

Watch The Stuttering Foundation's video for teens. It is on their web site at www.stutteringhelp.org or can be found if you go to Google videos, search for stuttering, and look for the one on teens. I think it is "straight talk for teens." I don't know if it has what to do on the letter S, but it shows speech therapists working with teens.
