I'm trying to open one port, TCP+UDP, for file sharing. I have a static IP, disabled windows firewall, disabled the router firewall, and applied forwarding in my router's admin. Still any simple connection test on the web times out. What am I missing?!
I can ping myself using the WAN address, thought I don't know if it means much.
I have WinXP SP2, and a Linksys WRT54G v3.03.6.

It's possible your ISP has blocked incoming traffic on the port in question to prevent file sharing. Even if you open your router, the request to the WAN address still has to go through your ISP's router and if they have it blocked you are out of luck. Check with your ISP to see if it's blocked. You can try a different port if the file sharing tool allows you to and the ISP allows incoming traffic.

If you're not too concerned about security, I suggest using the DMZ instead.

DMZ forwards all traffic to a certain IP address basically opening up your PC for everything on the internet.

You need to pick a different port. What program are you trying to use?

Ive got one of those routers on my networks and port forward with no problem. either try a few more ports or reset it first and then try a few more ports.

It sounds like you did everything right, so my only guess is that you either specified the wrong IP address for forwarding, or the wrong port.
