When some one says "The writing is on the wall", they are intending, the thing that is supposed to happen will eventually happen.

It means that the consequences of past actions are catching up to you. It means that you are going to have to face something you have done, and its coming sooner rather than later.
Say that you often turn up late for work, and someone said that "the writing is on the wall", it might mean you would be about to loose your job, because of what you do, your attitude.
Its a reference to the bible story, where the writing appeared on the wall to warn the people of the anger of God at their actions.

I think it is an expression that comes from a historical story in the bible where king Nebuchanezzar's son received a warning from God by seeing a hand writing on the wall....he could see the writing but could not interpret it. So, alot of ppl use that as an expression.
