If you want to become a makeup artist, you need someone over your shoulder as you work to provide a critique. You cannot get that on-line.

If you want to do movie makeup (as opposed to stage makeup, magazine makeup, head-shot makeup, wedding makeup, etc), you need to go to one of the movie makeup accredited schools (near Hollywood California) to get the needed credentials. For the other types, you can apprentice. You will then work for free for quite a while as you build a reputation. You are also usually responsible to purchase your own makeup. In addition, you go to the person being made up. He or she does not come to you. You will also have to work some interesting hours or you stop being called.

You need to take a cosmetology course, or even better, an aesthetician course. I really wanted to become a make up artist too, so I took cosmetology, but that is not specific to makeup and the face, its like hair and nails too. Aestheticians do facials and makeup. So you would need to go to school for that and then you could work at a salon/spa and make good money.

Or, you can get a job at a makeup counter at a store? Then you do not have to be a certified aesthetician to do makeup on the people who come to the counter. But you're required to wear only the brand of makeup you sell which sucks.

I wouldn't trust the home makeup thing. I went to cosmetology and you have to practice on actual people and have an instructor there to get liscensed and stuff, so I don't see how that can work, but I don't know.

I hope that helps! :)

You don't necessarily need a license to do makeup. It's nice to have but not a requirement. If going to school is not something you can do right now, you can get your foot in the door by getting a job at a makeup counter in a department store because when it comes to something like makeup artistry, it's easier to learn by actually DOING than by just reading or being told how to do it. Working in a department store can help expose you to different lines and products so you can use them and learn what types of products are out there, which items work best on which skin types, etc. Good luck in whatever you do!!!
