He was, for three years, the best reliever (possibly the best pitcher) in baseball. Because he was so good, and because the Dodgers were good but hardly dominant, he was grossly overused by Jim Tracy.
Then he got hurt, spent a couple of years convalescing, and came back...well, as who he is now. His formerly devastating breaking ball is broken.
If he could bring anything resembling his glory days, it would have been a great pickup. But he probably won't, and it seems that the Sox made an acquisition based on hope and reputation.

On paper Gagne would upgrade any bullpen in baseball, but I think it was an unnecessary gamble. Okajima and Papelbon are the best team in baseball to handle the last two innings, and disrupting it with a rental player who thinks he should be a closer is a big gamble. Epstein certainly put a big problem in Francona's lap. Usually too much talent is a good problem to have, but at this point in the season I think Francona would prefer to concentrate on finishing strong with a stable lineup and not have this disruption and distraction. I think it will be real interesting to see how he handles it, especially since Gagne has been inconsistent at the start.
The sweep of the White Sox has no bearing on this issue. Beating up on a slumping team doesn't prove they are really dominant.

i'm hoping Ganya is long gone ya!a great way away! from Boston! If he pitches returned interior the Play-offs Franconia would desire to get canned with alongside with him.BuckHoltz would desire to be put in as a mid- reliever so some physique smart would be in to take over for the overpaid choke artist(cube ok), on the least the newborn gets some good Playoff experience. After Gagne pitching the 1st interest that would desire to have been sufficient to understand he suck not to indicate all his appearances this season with the sox. in addition they might desire to provide him a shower and shave that mess off his face he sounds like a bum.

It never hurts to have more pitching.
Ask any Red Sox fan last week and they'll say it was a mistake...this week things are looking up. It was only a matter of time...He'll help the Sox in the postseason a lot.

It's ridiculous how teams like Boston and the Yankees can go out and get whoever they want, whenever... something needs to be changed in baseball.

NO! Boston's a huge place to play at and he's probably letting it get to him. Once he's relaxed watch out!
