Yes. Most all animals have an odor. Rats themselves don't smell so bad. It's their urine that stinks. Males will smell worse than females. Buy Marshall Bi-Odor for small animals. You put it in the pets drinking water and it reduces the odor quite a bit. Change your rats bedding twice a week (no less) or more depending on how many you get. Use a safe biocide, like Vanodine, every time you clean or change their food/water. The fewer rats the better, odor wise that is. They are also very clean animals grooming themselves quite often. You can bathe them yourself if you like, too. For a first pet, they're not too hard to take care of. BTW, hamsters, mice, guinea pigs, rabbits, cats, dogs, birds, chickens, lizard poo, etc. all smell bad. What pet would your parents have picked for you? Just curious.

Links below are for Vanodine info and second sells both Vanodine and Bi-Odor or you can find Bi-Odor at a pet store but not the Vanodine.

Rats do start to smell if you don't clean their cage every 3 to 4 days, In the past 6 years I have had 7 rats total. They are mostly great pets, They only bite if you stick your finger in their face. If you feed them and give them water and clean their cage then they are great to have. By the way, for some odd reason, rats love moist cat treats. I would give them to mine at least 3 times a day. My rats were fat and spoiled. Oh and they are pretty cheap to buy/ Care for.

Yes, they can if you do not keep after their cage. The one benefit to having a rat that no one has told you is that you won't have a mouse problem. Rats are territorial and mice and rats cannot occupy the same niche. Here are some of the GOOD points of keeping a rat.

As a general rule: male rodents smell more than females. Males have a musky smell. Females usually have little, if any, body odor.

It really depends on how clean you keep the cage. they need the cage clean more than once a week to keep them healthy and the cage smelling less. (clean the cage every two or three days. After that they'd start tossing poos and the dirty bedding out. )

Besides the males' body odor, they really don't smell all that much. MUCH less than hamsters.

Well I have 2 guinea pigs and 2 hamsters in the same room...after like a day you become immune to the smell but the first day you get them they smell only a little! But you have to change their cage otherwise their CAGE will smell, not them. If you want t persuade them, tell them you will keep them in your room and if they think they are that bad, ge one of those Febreeze plug-inair fresheners!

They have a scent but it's not horrible. To me it's always reminded me of a cross between lightly dirty socks and popcorn. But it's only strong if you don't clean their cage often. If you're holding them you wont smell it as much but when they spend most their time in a cage the scent tends to condense in there.

If you really want to get an idea of what they smell like, go to petsmart or petco and ask to smell one of the cages. They'll look at you funny, but just explain you want to get a rat and are curious.

We've had a lot of pet rats. They themselves don't smell but if you don't clean their cages...it smells like urine. Just keep the cages clean. Carefresh is a great bedding and absorbs a lot of odors.

Rats smell if you neglect to change their cage. And that is the only reason they would ever smell, lack of care.
