My little 11 year old cousin was wondering about a job she can get to save money for her laptop, she's so responsible. She wants to work for about a month and any money she's short of her mom will fill in. Her laptop will be $500 and she also wants an mp3 player and a digital camera. She wants to do anything except babysitting. Her mother doesn't believe that any child should have to watch a baby. The only thing is what will she do. Her mom says that she and her husband wil buy the mp3 player and camera as a reward for being so responsible but she wants to work for her laptop. She's been saving allowance and has gotten half way to the laptop but she needs another job. What can she do!

1) Work at McDonalds or Tim Hortons or some fast foods as a cashier/server. They accept kids.
2) Deliver newspapers in her area
3) Offer to mow the lawn, wash the car, wash a dog, paint a fence, clean a storage room or some other chore for a neighbor/family/friend for a price.
4) In the weekend early morning, when people are not working, have a yard sale to get rid of old furniture or things your family doesn't want. This takes hard work having to wait for people to come and look at the stuff.
6) Work at Hallmark card store. I've seen teenagers work there.
7) Work at a grocery store as a cashier. There are some teenagers that do this.
8) If she is gifted in singing or playing a musical instrument like the fiddle or violin, she can go to the park and play and have a bowl for people to drop money in to hear her talent.
9) If she has something of value like she no longer wants, she can auction it off at Ebay or take it to a pawn shop.
10) If she grew some pumpkins or roses, she could probably sell it.
11) She can wear a big car wash sign charging a price, have a hose and car soap, bucket and offer people on the road for a hand car wash. Having a car wash is common when raising money. She might like to get her friends to help and they can divvy up the profits.
12) Maybe she could have a bake sale at her school but I am not sure what the rules are about it because maybe they only allow it if it is for charity. Ask her to find out about it at her school or community centre.
13) She can sell ice-cream/popsicles with those bicycles that carry them. Teenagers do this and they have the energy to ride those bicycles. It's what I did when I was a teen.
14) I hate to suggest a lemonade stand because normally I wouldn't buy from one because I am afraid the kids aren't clean when they make the drinks or whether the cups are clean. However, she can demonstrate meticulous care and hygienic she is by wearing a clean white apron and cap and with her hair tied back and always wear a new fresh plastic hand gloves when preparing a new batch of juice and dispose the plastic hand gloves when you have to handle cash so she doesn't forget and start touching food with her hands. Always put on new plastic hand gloves when she has to touch food again. Wash the lemonades and utensils use clean juice maker and use new unused styrofoam cups. I have seen enough unhygienic bakeries or fast food places (teenagers and adults) whom I didn't see wash their hands, yet they handle the food and the cash with their bare hands which makes me lose my appetite. I am too embarassed to say anything to them but I never go back to that place after.
15) Offer neighbors who have dogs to walk their dog for an hour for a fee.
16) She can go to her school or local library and ask them if there are some short term work she can do for a fee. Let them know she's trying to raise a little extra money to buy something on her own.
17) If she doesn't want to be cashier, she can be a kitchen helper. That's what my sister and I did when we were kids. We helped peel the skin off potatos and carrot. Then we helped wrap dumplings. We chopped and grinded vegetables to get the juice out. We use the dishwasher to clean dishes. We cleaned equipment and sweeped mopped the floor at the end of the day. It was tough work.
18) If she doesn't want to do cashier work, she may still apply to a store like Zellers. Simply just tell them or write in her resume that she doesn't want to apply to be a cashier. I am sure they have other kinds of positions. I see some people stock up on merchandises on shelves, sort merchandises, etc.
19) She should go to her local job employment centre or job agency and let them know she's looking for some jobs but specify that she's not going to do cashier work and she's only 11. When I was a teen, I notice they had stuff like that.
20) The school is also a resource of getting odd jobs to make money. Check with the people in the office. Maybe they can have her do some filing or something.
21) Maybe she can post a job wanted in her bulletin board of her library. Specify that she's only 11 and she's looking for extra work. Sometimes, she might see jobs posted on the bulletin that might suit her. Or she can ask the librarian if there's any job she can do like help put back books in the proper shelves or help sign books in/out for a fee. Have her give them a neat resume to show how responsible she is.
22) If your family has a BBQ, they can help her set it up and prepare hotdogs for her to sell to people. This can go along with the lemonade/juice stand if she chooses to set one up.
23) If she has a vacuum she can offer to vacuum people's car and wipe the vinyl interior and mirror for a fee. If she finds any change, maybe she can ask them if she can keep it.
24) She can buy a case of 24 bottled water for a cheap price at the store and put them in the freezer to make them ice cold. Put the bottled water in a cooler with ice and then the cooler on a wagon. Then take them to the beach or somewhere where there is lots of people and it's hot and sell each bottle for a dollar because people always want to drink something cold in a hot day but they might not want all the calories that soda has.
25) If her parents won't let her babysit kids, would they let her babysit animals? Maybe she can babysit some dog or cat and take the dog for a walk for a fee. I think I already mention the washing the dog, too.

I realize many of these suggestions may not work for her but I think the weekend yard sale is not a bad idea. I myself made some money selling my old junk I no longer wanted. It's better than throwing them in the trash.

Hope this helps. I think there's nothing wrong with a 11 year old trying to raise money for a laptop and camera. You're a great cousin for wanting to help her. It's silly for people to say she's too young to want to try to get those things. They are just jealous. It is really admirable and something she can put in her resume and it will make her seem mature, independent, hardworking, driven and ambitious which are all good qualities for other great jobs later in life. It's good that she has you for encouragement and support.

11 is a tough age for working--no one will give her a real job due to labor laws--so she should take a few extra chores at home and earn a little more from mom and dad--she can offer to repay them when she reaches 13 and can get a bona fide job that will allow her to really make some money. 11 is the start of fun years for young people--she has school as a top priority--a little fun and that is her day. I admire her drive and ambition--hope she can work this all out. Her parents have got to be proud of her money handling--saving is difficult for most kids her age--she is doing very well and I would hope they will buy her the important stuff first and the little luxuries later...the lap top is important--the others can wait a while.Wish her luck from me.

I also want to have those things...but I know that my parents wouldn't allow me to have those things b/c it's just waste of money. I mean you can buy those if you already have a job. What my parents did to get me those things is we had an agreement...If I got high grades and still at the honor roll at the end of the school year, they will let me buy those things.

This is the coolest agreement we ever had. Your cousin will be able to get high grades which is good for her, and at the same time...she'll get what she wants.

Hope this helped you and your cousin.

Get a fundraiser kit--I think Sam's has them. Buy a box of chocolate bars and sell them around the neighborhood, and at school, if it's not against the rules. The money is fast and easy, especially at school.

Newspaper routes. Many kids her age who don't babysit deliever newspapers. It might take her awhile to save up, but she'd be earning money and responsibilty. Call your newspaper thats in your area and see if they need any newspaper delievers.
