There is an old computer emulator I use frequently that runs under DOS. The sound worked fine on my Sound Blaster Live! 5.1 card under Windows ME, but since upgrading to XP, the sound is now noisy and unclear. Oddly enough, the same program runs fine on my laptop under XP. The laptop has a built in Altec Lansing sound card. Would changing to a non-Sound Blaster card that is 5.1 compatible in my desktop computer possibly clear up this problem?

No. Sound cards nowadays are losing their compatibility with DOS. Your best bet, if your computer is powerful enough, is to run the program in an emulator like DOSBox.

I might try with different drivers versions. A Sound Blaster must be more compatible than the Altec Lansing. If that test fails, I'd rather think on moving to virtual machines than an emulator

Check and see if you are using Quick Time..if you are you may need to set up the preferences. I had the same problem..
The sound or music was distorted and seemed to be over amplified. Note the setting for type of playback in Quick time.

Try running it under dosbox, it kicks butt when it comes to running dos programs: http://dosbox.sourceforge.net/
I have a bunch of old dos games and programs that don't seem to run on anything, but they work great with dosbox, sound and all.
