When normal breaking u flake off some dust, the harder the breaking the more flaking.
The disc brake pads are formulated to wear longer and dust less. Ceramic pads and metalic pads dust differantly than organics.

Brake dust is released from both types of brakes. Drum brakes had a tendancy to collect some brake dust because the drum (enclosed ) the dust. Disc brakes deposit the dust directly into the air because basically the braking mechanism is not enclosed like drum brakes. I am guessing that you have some concern for the environment by your question. I will add that disc brake pads nor drum brake pads (brake shoes) are not made of asbestos anymore. As best I can tell the surface that provides the expendable friction is made of some type metal dust that is glued together under pressure. I think this type of pad is better for the environment than the old asbestos pads.

Drum keeps the dust inside the drum. Yes the dust gets into the air and on your rims, that whys they get dirty.

Using ceramic brake pads when replacment is nec. virtually eliminates visual dust.

they all produce dust, its quality of pad and shoe you get. fronts wear out faster than rear due to the fact that the fronts apply more than rear. it all goes in the air just like exhaust , doesnt matter hard brake or regular braking friction is what stops the car why it wears out,

brake dust is concentrated on busy street intersections in cities. the front brakes wear out twice as fast as rear ones, so the less dust would be on the rear drums.

this should be easier than the time it took ya to ask the question!!!!!! jack up the left or right wheel where ya feel the noise is comming from,,, remove wheel, just as ya would if ya have a flat,,,,,,, look/feel the dust shield on the back side of your rotor,,, ya should be able to detect any bends that may be rubbing your rotor!!!!!! if this is your problem ,,,, take a pair of channel locks and bend the dust shield back away from the rotor,,,,,, replace your wheel and let her off the jack,,,,, your ready ta race!!!!! just like NASCAR pit stop !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! good luck,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,
