There is no way Sunnis are going to pay any tax to a Shi'ite government. And there is no way the Shi'ites are going to give the Sunnis any oil.
These guys have been killing each other for over a thousand years. They will never reconcile, which is the purpose of the surge.
So Iraq cannot survive and our guys are being killed in Iraq for no good reason. Except maybe that Bush can leave office with the war still going and them blame his disaster on the next president.

A Shi'ite president and a Sunni congress. Why didn't I think of that? I'm going to contact Harry Potter as soon as possible and see if I can borrow his magic wand! Thanks a million!

Let's refine the words. A civil war occurs between factions within a nation, a viable political entity. Iraq is not a nation in that sense. It is an area previously part of the Ottoman empire that was destroyed in WW I. Britain named that area "Iraq" and said: "Now, all you guys are Iraqis and you had better get along!". Iraq is inhabited by several different and differing religious cults or sects that have hated and killed each other for over a thousand years.
Their war is not a civil war. It is a religious war, similar to those that occurred among Christians. It has been in progress for centuries.
The day we leave, the Shi'ites will begin to slaughter the much weaker Sunnis, who will promptly retreat from the Baghdad area and give up all hope of getting the Shi'ites oil. My hope is that they will quickly agree to boundaries for Sunnistan, Shiastan and Kurdistan.
After peace, the two main Shi'ite factions will fight. The winner will sell all the oil he can pump.

Johnny0802, you didn't answer the question. Difficulty reading? Poverty of intellect? Borrow a dictionary and look up the word "dialogue".
The question is practical, cogent, and important. Your fellow citizens are dying every day of the week because you can't answer that question. Have you no sense of patriotism? Love for your fellow man? For Christ's sake...

Lady Shondra - A question is a statement ending in a question mark and demanding an answer. My question had a question mark at the end and demanded an answer. Take another look at it.
A dialogue between two individuals in a political debate consist of a proposition or question on which the two parties take opposing sides. The implication is that premises and facts will be presented and conlusions will be arrived at by the rules of logic.
It is not enough to answer "yes" or "no" or to simply say that you are for or against the proposition or question. The laws of civilized dialogue require that you dispute the facts or point out logical flaws in your opponents statement.
Grow up!

gray_wolf - If left alone Kurdistan will certainly survive.
If left alon the much larger Shi'ite (not Iraqi) army will drive the Sunni population out of the Baghdad region into the Western province of Anbar and easily defeat the Sunni insurgents in any battle. Shiastan wil definitely survive.
If the Sunnis stay out of the way of the Kurds and the Shi'ites, they will survive very well in Sunnistan.
It is Iraq that will not survive after it is partitioned into Sunnista, Shiastan, and Kurdistan.
Give up on Iraq! The Shi'ites will never give a drop of oil to the Sunnis and the Sunnis will never pay a shekel of tax to a Shi'ite government.
