I think if it's Dell, it's not generic - it's a Dell. If it is out of warranty, you have no choice but to replace. I suggest you watch your Sunday ads. Here, our Sunday paper always has ads from Office Max, Office Depot, Best Buy, CompUSA, and Circuit City. I check these out regularly and got my printers and LCDs on weekend or holiday specials. Today, for example (8/26/07) they were advertising a 17" LCD for $139. Sales like this are usually one or two days and are in-store, but if you get to the store when it opens, you can get a good deal. I picked up my BenQ LCD Jan. 2005 for about $179. Works fine for me.

screen savers are a novelty with LCDs - the screen saver was invented for CRT use because the Phosphor layer that converts the cathode ray into visible light can decay and if an image is allowed to 'burn-in' it can stay that way indefinitely.
as for hibernation - LCDs are designed to have a longer lifespan than a year. If somehow you did manage to kill the backlight though (say, if the monitor was constantly on and running for a year) then it should be easy to get replaced should your warranty fail.
but honestly, it simply sounds defective.

DIdn't this Dell LCD Monitor come with any type of Warranty? If so, refer back to it, and search the information on it, as to what is and isn't covered under this Warranty, and see when this Warranty Expiration Date is. If it didn't come with any Warranty, then, I hate to say this, but think you are out of luck in any help with the Fried Monitor, except to donate it to someone or some type of organization that would be able to accept
Non-working Items? Also, try searching Online, for websites that sell Computer Monitors, etc., and hopefully you will be able to make a decision.
I have a 17" LCD HP Pavillion, Flat Screen Monitor, and it wasn't that pricey. Shop around near your local,
Computer Stores, and see what kind of deals they have to offer, in replacing your Fried Dell Monitor. Or, you can go to www.ebay.com and they have many, many choices and name brands in Monitors, Computers, Printers, etc. for you to look at and buy or bid on. Don't know if you are familiar with Ebay's website, but you will see, once you are on that site, all sorts of items they sell, etc. If you have any trouble understanding their policies, pls. IM me or email me, ok? My IM is singsalot51, and my email is : singsalot51@yahoo.com. Pls. keep me posted as to your results you obtain, ok? Take care and hope this info/suggestions help you with your dilemna. Bye fur now.

LCD monitors can be had for about 100 and up.
It wasn't a lack of screen saver that killed it. It was either defective or mishandled (dropped or contaminated with dust or liquids)
Check with dell to see if still under warranty. Probably not worth paying for repair.

We use Dell products for our medium sized company, and I call Dell all the time for warranty support.
1/800-822-8965 Tech support
Give them the serial number (might need your order number and/or invoice number also) and they will check if your monitor is still under warranty and ask you a few questions about what's wrong with it. They will send you a replacement monitor within 3-5 days and ask you to send your old monitor in the return box.

First check and see if you're still under warranty. If you are, Dell should replace it.
Otherwise, start shopping for a new one. It's almost always cheaper to replace these rather than try to get it repaired.
