My black moor's tail fins and 'arm' fins are torn. it happened over night.
it lives with a fantail.
theres nothing sharp in the tank (cause i know their eyes are damaged easily).
he has lost alot of weight recently- but the fantail hasn't.
how long does it take for the fins to heal?
should i seperate the fish?
i have an empty, but smaller than what he's used to, goldfish bowl.

i've had both fish for about 3 1/2 months.

If your tank is relatively new (running less than 2 months and not cycled beforehand), the split fins and lack of appetite many be caused by ammonia in the tank. Does the moor also gulp air at the surface or sit on the bottom for long times without much activity? These would be other signs of ammonia.

If you can't do a water test yourself, you can do a 50% water change to bring the level down. Take a water sample from your tank to a local pet store and have them test the sample for ammonia and nitrite, as these are both toxic to your fish if the level is above 1.0 (try to keep it below 0.5).

If only one fish had been in the tank previously, it may have apapted to the levels that were already present, but a new fish wouldn't be used to the ammonia or nitrite, and adding a new fish would have increased the levels. If you've had both fish for the same amount of time, one may just be more sensitive than the other.

He is dying from bad water quality. Goldfish can't survive in a bowl. And if you are going to make them suffer in a bowl, don't be so lazy, they need cleaned at least once every other day. But they will still die. The torn fins are called fin rot. There are other painful things happening to your fish you cannot see. Hopefully you will put them in a tank. For $22 you can get a 10 gallon and a filter from petsmart, so don't be so cheap. These are living creatures.

It's probably due to poor water condition.

Do a 50% change twice a week for the next 2 weeks and add about 0.01% (1g per litre) salt and see if it gets better.
It should stop deteriorating in one or two day and if the water condition remain good, it should heal in two to three weeks.

You can keep it in the same tank. If the other bowl is smaller, there is no point putting it there. Just keep water clean through water change and things will be fine.

If it happened overnight, i would tend to say it was possible because of the other fish attacking it. I've had a few "bully" fish, although mainly between different species.
I don't know about goldfish though.

If you think that's so, i would separate them, atleast until the damaged fish heals.
To aid the healing of the fishes fins, i usually put in some Melafix, can be bought at many aquariums.

the two posters have stable suggestion. end shifting fish and in case you ought to continuously positioned them in a bag and aclimate them by using floating the bag interior the hot tank formerly liberating them only like the shop tells you once you first purchase them. Moores like chilly water and could be saved as cool as attainable. Aqurium salt might help yet i might lean in the direction of the melafix and stick to the instructions.
