I don't think a tip is an income at all! It is what people give you willingly for doing a good job. If people feel like that then people shouldn't tip so the government get s nothing! That is ridicouols. A tip is a gift and is not income! Tips are a little extra money for doing something well, and you shouldn't have to share what you are directly given to the government who wastes it on causes such as Iraq.

Please save me the drama! I do not work at a place that gets tips, but I am standing up for others that do. people shouldn't just shut up and be happy with what they are given they deserve more! Please don't lecture me on filing taxes and crap, I know this, but you honestly think that the extra dollar soemone gives you should be sliced and diced? That is like saying that the dollar you find on the floor should be claimed to the government and taxed or babysitting or mowing the lawn should be taxed, its a service right? Sounds stupid, but how different is it?

To frank s: say what you want you glib idiot. I never asked anyone to be rude, but just to say their opinion. You don't know what you are talking about. IF TIPS ARE INCOME, WHAT DO YOU THINK BABYSITTTING MONEY IS? UNDER THE TABLE RIGHT? WHAT DO YOU THINK MOWING THE LAWN IS? WHAT DO YOU THINK DOING ANY SERVICE IS? Why don't you do some research before you make assumptions. And no I am not 12 you werido. Judging by your avatar, you are probably a child molestor/rapist who has no life but to respond twice to a question on yahoo. You probably spend hours on this website, which is sad, get a life! IF YOU ARE NOT APART OF THE SOLUTION YOU ARE PART OF THE PROBLEM!

Tip taxing does make me angry. Tips are defined as "a small present of money given directly to someone for performing a service or menial task; gratuity" (dictionary.com). In reality, tips over a certain amount (which is ridiculously small) must be reported to the government. It's really sad the government taxes weekly paychecks, purchases, bonuses, and just about everything unclaimed and withheld from their eager hands. And it's not just the principle that grinds my gears! I am a Starbucks employee, and although my weekly tips are given to me in cash, it is taken out of my paycheck. And how much do you think is fair for the government to take? I have been told that the government takes 50 cents per hour out of the hourly tips. And for those of you who think ooh that's so small, you don't know the meager amount we make per hour, and over time it all adds up! Those who believe it is fair to legally taxes tips, think about under the table wages that are not taxed, such as babysitting money. Why shouldn't you report that to the government? Take a look at the whole perspective.

TIP TAXING SHOULD BE ILLEGAL!

Tips are income. My g/f is a server and they take the taxes right out of their paycheck. People at starbucks also make a lot of tips. Servers get paid minimally per hour and the majority of their income is in tips. Maybe I should call my employer and tell him to not pay my regular salary, just give me a big "tip" each month.

Technically, a lot of your different examples (Babysitting, mowing lawns and presents) could desire to be suggested for taxation besides... i'm a bartender, I make maximum of my money from suggestion, yet I see the reasonings in the back of taxing those suggestion... If suggestion weren't taxed it may extra suitable shift the tax burden to the decrease paid and decrease experienced workers of the international... i think of its unrealistic to anticipate that each and all of us taxes bypass immediately to Iraq, we could not forget approximately the government investment for coaching, temporary well-being care, public works and so on, and in the past you ***** that those amenities are lacking, undergo in strategies which you're offering a plan designed to do away with a number of their investment...

If you file your taxes (like you should) you will get some or all of it back depending on your status.

not all your tips are taxed...just the ones that are claimed as income (usually just enough to make it where you are making minimum wage)...at least that's how my employer does it

Tips are not gifts. They are compensation for services. They are taxable and there is withholding.
