P.S. Althogh I've seen 'Return to Oz" it bears no semblance to the classical "Wizard of Oz." and is rather a scary childrens movie.

...well, author L. Frank Baum DID write several books in the 'Oz' series, bearing intriguing and fantastic adventures virtually unknown to the persons only privvy to the 1939 classic film, the quasi-sequel Disney did back in 1985, or the Japanese-inked cartoon series...

...I'd say, if the filmmakers, who propose to remake/reimagine the original 1939 film, were privvy to the idea, they should instead attempt to do a multiple T.V. movie mini-series of all of the 'Oz' books, using today's state-of-the-art technology and special effects...

...basically do greatness to the 'Oz' books on television, much as the greatness Peter Jackson did for the "Lord of the Rings" books, on the big screen...

I don't see what the problem is with Return to Oz (1985)

http://imdb.com/title/tt0089908/

I think it was an unofficial sequel, but it kept with the facts of the original. I found it to be a great, different take on Oz, with more interesting characters and creatures (I thought the Wheelers were wonderful) than in the original , and with a younger Dorothy(oh no, I undermined a classic). I never did quite sit well with the Judy Garland Dorothy who looked a little too old for the role(17 I think), though I love her to death. It's a deal more twisted than the first, darker, but so fun to watch. Give it a try.

I think that there was. Many years ago Disney did a flick titled "Return to OZ". It was pretty sad, as I recall.
Why try to improve on perfection? The original is a classic.

Actually the book (which is what the broadway show and movie were based on) is part of a series of books written by Frank Baum. The series quite good, but it goes from cute and sweet to eerie a little.
