Hi. Recently, when I go to turn on my laptop, the screen has black and white lines through it. When I plug it into an external monitor, it works. But I cant continue to use the external monitor since Im on the go quite often... Any ideas on what this might be?

The only way to fix it is to wait for it to work.. I try to turn on and off the laptop, but it doesnt always solve the problem...

There are a few possibilities:

One is a bad panel. Each row and column of pixels on the panel has an electrical connection to a driver chip. If these chips go defective, or the connections break then you end up with dark or coloured lines across or down the screen.

It could be a bad cable. There is a flex cable that connects your laptop screen to the body of the laptop. This gets flexed and moved every time you move the screen. This can develop cracks and so break some of the connections.

Lastly it could be how well the video chip has been put on the PCB.

The bad news is you can not fix any of these yourself. You need to send the laptop in for repair. If you do I would recommend pulling the hard drive before you send it. Just to stop some bright spark at the repair center re-formating it for you and erasing all your data.
