I've read and heard comments lately about how no one wants to hire someone with a Ph.D. since it would be so much money, and getting one is pretty much killing your career. My goal is to teach adult education (college), but I'd like to hear what Yahoo! users think about it.

In my field, those with Ph.D.s are generally paid less than those with master's degrees, so that wouldn't make any sense. If your goal is to teach at the college level, you really need to get a Ph.D. While right now there are some people teaching at the college level who don't have that degree, it appears that there are fewer and fewer of them. When I first thought of teaching, I tried it out for two years before getting my Ph.D., but I wouldn't be able to do that now, because no one would hire me without the Ph.D. for a full-time teaching job.

Well if you're going to teach high school, I'd say don't, you'd be fine with a Master's at most, but if you want to teach college, YES. At some colleges, and this may vary state to state, you need a doctorate level to be a full time professor, at least this is what they told us. There were some people there who were graduate students that might have taught or helped a class who didnt have a Ph.D, and the lab aids were not required to have Ph.D's but if you are serious about being a full-time college professor, I'd say do it.

You have to pretty much have a Ph.D to teach most universities courses, unless you want to teach at a college

If you're going to teach at a college or university you need a PhD.

Only if you are going to pursue academics or research as a career. If you don't like either of these professions, PhD is a waste of time.
