Because the guys people wanted were guys the Yankees weren't willing to part with -- Phil Hughes, Alan Horne, Ian Kennedy, and my boy Joba Chamberlain. I don't blame the Yankees either. They kept what they need for success and they did what they needed to win in the future which is keeping their future. They made 2 neccessary moves -- aquiring a better back-up catcher in Molina who is a huge step up from Wil Nieves in return for a too old for the minors relief pitcher Jeff Kennard. Also, they aquired Betemeit for a struggling Scot Proctor. They addressed a couple of their needs while not adding much money to their payroll and keeping their future studs. I would have liked them to get a big bat for the minor leagues since we only really have Jose Tabata but oh well. I think the Yankees were smart and made great deals at the deadline.
- Joba Chamberlain Jr.

As it's been stated the Yankees didn't want to deal their prospects, however contrary to some comments here, Eric Gagne does not suck. The Red Sox also didn't give up a lot to get him, Kason Gabbard is doing well now, but he's often injured and has had 3-4 arm surgeries. David Murphy was #3 on the depth chart for outfielders in the Red Sox system behind Ellsbury and Moss.
Basically, the Yankees failed to add another quality arm because they thought they could add Chamberlain and it would make the difference, the problem: With pitchers like Clemens and Mussina going less than 7 innings consistently, it puts a strain on bullpen arms which will start to show by the end of the season (kind of already is).

Can you say EGO! They think they are already the best (though we can read the standings)
You watch they will get some in the off season, picking up Gagne obviously hasnt panned out for the Sox so really not something to compare to.
Besides there really was no pitchers on the market this summer if you look around the league everyone that had a pitcher to trade wanted big time prospects and options

Who was available to go after? Gagne blows saves when he's not even closing and he was supposedly the best pitcher on the market at the deadline.
And yes Gagne does suck, his era is in double digits you cannot justify that in any way. Gabbard is better than you think as well. How many times did he lose while he was pitching in Schilling's place? Boston gave up 3 young players for a one time fluke that is also coming off arm problems, so I don't see how they upped the Yankees at the deadline at all. The Yankees' moves sured up their bench. They needed it to give guys some rest after this tough stretch in their schedule.

At this fee I do not believe the Yankees will grow to be getting any of the ones gigantic names. They had been meant to get Cliff Lee who on the final minute went to the Texas Rangers, and so they had been the "frontrunners" for Dan Haren who on the final minute went to the LA Angels. And Ted Lilly spent a few years at the Yankees already, again round like 2001. And Jake Westbrook was once with the Yankees again in 2000 (he was once the starter for the primary MLB recreation I ever went to, spot begin while Roger Clemens bought harm).

They have spent oudals of money on pitching already.
One more picture will probably not make a difference right now.
Try being a small market teams fan and you may get a chuckle out of your question
