People are becoming more selfish and materialistic. Money and power have always been part of humanities problems. It seems though, with big business especially, that we are becoming less empathetic towards each other. We seem to desire material objects above many things. What will the future be like? Any ideas?

We are presently passing through the Kali Yuga phase of life (the most darkened chapter of history). Rather we have already entered the ghor Kali Yuga phase of life when every human being is to cater for self. All relationships in their lowest ebb... how further low the values deteriorate... Time will tell!

Sometimes it is really difficult to differentiate animals from human beings! Wanton desires and materialistic riches rule the roost! The means have become an end... money has become an important player in personal relationships! In the cosmic system everything goes full circle. During the times of Lord Krishna adharma (lawlessness) was at its peak.

The coming of Lord Krishna then (an Avatar of that era... God manifest in human form) was the call of the day. In the present times people await with abated breath the coming of Bhagwan Kalki... one with almost similar powers that of Lord Krishna... one who shall re-establish Dharma (righteousness) and root out evil altogether!

One single human being... with potential mankind has never witnessed before... a Mahavira, Gautama Buddha, Jesus Christ or Prophet Mohammed coupled with the powers of Chanakya shall advent shortly. We are presently passing through 4 a.m. in the morning. When the clock rings 5 a.m. ... the world shall witness world war 3!

The end of an era always results in a war... and in the coming world war 3 is expected annihilation of 1200 million people from the face of Mother Earth. The torment and sufferings galore... it shall be a fight to the finish between Christianity and Islamic Dharma... the only two religions that are fundamentalists in nature!

Unable to practice forgiveness, patience, persistence and perseverance... both these communities would almost wipe out each other! The coming world war 3 is expected around 2012... The year of Bhagwan Kalki! The revered Bhagwan Kalki is expected to surface around 2014... A commoner who shall have support of 2000 million people world over!

The dawn of a new era... the golden period is expected beyond 2014! It is the time when clock rings 6 a.m. in the morning... the time for a new beginning... a new revelation! More on Kali Yuga - http://www.godrealized.com/kaliyuga.html

Well, I'm not going to put any money on the Human Millennium happening in the next 200 years or so if that's what you're asking.

Disturbingly, proportionally speaking, things have become alot "better" for alot more people, however this is also in the same way as saying as Mc Donalds can that Billions and Billions have been served. So it may be said that some tens of millions live ideally in modern societies with reasonable access to food, clothing , shelter with access to education and medicines and legal redress and reasonably pleasant working conditions, Billions live marginally better than they may have in the past. Billions live worse than they have with absolutely no hope of their lot getting significantly better.

So it's a very relative statement.

We live in the west in a society with a 1/2 life, there are perhaps another 30-40 years of which folks can convince themselves that we live in the best of all possible worlds and after which we will have adapted to using less than 1/4th the energy we currently do, eating less food and having a generally less ideal situation overall OR we will be in full denial of our situation and be thinking happy thoughts without preparing for the reality of such a world and be truly screwed when China or some combination of states either declares war on us or declares war on each other and we all learn to live with an "acceptable" amount of nuclear fallout in our systems.

I don't that's it's apocalyptic to suggest that this is a probable condition of an unmitigated nuclear proliferation or anything but that kind of scenario has left the realm of skeptical / fanatical crazy talk and become the staple of well considered statesmen, and that should be somewhat terrifying.

It depends on the out look of the person. It is told that there will be great tribulation in the end of days. Tribulation in itself can come in many forms. If your poor you need money, tribulation. If your rich and can't find fulfillment in life, tribulation. War, famine, forms of tribulation.

The greatest disappointment of humanity is we never learn from the past.

What I mean is this. What the future holds we are unsure of, but what the past has for us to learn from is a great deal. Do we look at it that way? I wonder how many right now tell themselves when they read this the future holds great things, or technology will lead us to a better way of life.

Didn't the roman empire feel the same way. The greatest technology of it's times were created within the roman empire's time line.

But, the Roman Empire as big as it was still fell. The reason.
The evil hearts of men. Exactly what this question has in it's very text is why Rome fell.

When will it happen here?
Only the future and God knows.
None of us do.

Do you see the past faults of Rome or other places that made the very mistakes we make now.

Different times and technologies yes.
Different ways to solve the mistakes No.
Still making the same mistakes.

Huh! I wonder how bad it will get be for it all comes tumbling down.

i think there are dark times in every time of human existence. the only reason we feel like this now is because we are living in this time. but honestly, life is only however you take it: if you look at it with positivity and you're in a good environment, you may see things as becoming better. it really is just how you individually look at it. you can't really say if the WHOLE of humanity is dark or not; the world is way too intricate to make a generalization about all of humanity.
I definitely understand what you mean, but your question is not based on something concrete enough to make judgment on. It depends on the point of view of every individual and what they value or not and how these things are being affected, since everyone sees things a different way than everyone else.

You have anticipated the answer correctly.... yes dark times are not far off.

It is perhaps like this...... we came together for security reasons. Man was too weak to defend himself all alone. So we formed groups and communication means and thus found greater security. But that opened the door to cooperation in many other aspects and that is what led to our civilization and storage and development of knowledge and skills enhancing our overall combined capabilities even further. Such fruitful cooperation necessitated certain social norms and morals of behavior involving some sacrifice of individuality for the sake of maximizing collective wellbeing. Similarly we also learned to sacrifice a bit on the short term for the sake of the long term in order to maximize cumulative wellbeing over a period of time.

What is happening today is that we are unfortunately giving greater importance and emphasis to selfish individual interests and short term approach which is reflecting as our materialistic and apathetic way of life. This would obviously lead to compromising the collective and cumulative wellbeing of mankind as a whole... in other words a downward curve might well have begun. Logically, this trend would ultimately lead to weakening or destruction of our security and thus even possible extinction.

However, I believe that we would get wiser as it goes and at some stage, we would wake up and arrest this trend in our own interests and wisely begin once again to build up cooperation, empathy and necessary sacrifice of some self-interest and short-term with an eye on maximizing our collective as well as cumulative wellbeing.

I also feels similar like yours. People are becoming more inhuman and more like machines. Our feelings and values are becoming less and less day by day. People are going crazy for the money and false fame. I think this is all the process to go back to the stone age once again.. when people will reach to the top of the selfishness and materialism, they will return to the simplicity and love

When have we not been in dark times different from now...? Check your history books and stop being so positive about our past! It has only gotten better! You only feel the current pain. That doesn't mean we are worst... I wish people that make these comments went back in time and lived their lives under more political oppression, scarcity, torture, religious oppression, and many others!!!

Maybe YOUR world. I agree with ikiraf. And so does history. You might want to consider who and why you are being fed these negative delusions. Just because we have better worldwide news coverage doesn't mean that nothing bad happened before you knew about it.
