That's because we enjoy getting ripped off in this country. The junk from McDonalds costs pence to make each item, but if the demand is high enough, they will charge more for it, its what they call their healthy option - healthy for their bank accounts that is!

The cost of living is more expensive here than most countries because the basic fundamental difference in business is this...

Example, say you had a pallet of burgers for sale...

In the USA they sell for profit on return of the whole pallet selling.

In the UK they sell for profit on return of part of the pallet being sold.

What that means is in the UK you sell for example 1/3rd of the pallet, you make your money back, sell 2/3rds of a pallet, you got your investment back and made a nice profit, sell the whole pallet and you doing very nicely even though it may of taken you 3 times longer to sell and your stock has every chance of going rotten before its time.

In the US, this same pallet will sell twice as fast, you make your profit on selling the whole pallet that is half the price of the UK pallet and the punter is happy, your happy and your bank manager is happy because your not left with a pallet of rotting burgers.

If you can see the difference then your beginning to see how the US has a powerful retail market and the UK has a fluctuating market, you only have to look at places like wallmart to see that business model working.

The cost of living is higher in the UK, so the prices are higher. They also vary in some places in the US. You can buy a cheaper burger in rural South Dakota cheaper than New York City.

In your country, the spending power of your dollar is equivalent to that of the other countries. The value you get for your dollar is similar to the value other people get for their dollar or whatever even though their money may be smaller.

In Australia, at least where I went to, a coke also costs A$1, but A$1=US$0.7.

Because burgers are rather like Coca-cola, Mars bars
and glasses of beer i.e. a measure of the cost of things
in the region of the world in which you live.

Have you tried your comparison with McDonald's
in China or Russia?

I don't know about the UK but in the U.S. places will charge what the market will bear. If it will be purchased by enough peoople for that price, that is what McDonald's will sell it for. If no one (or not enough people) will buy at that price, McDonald's will either quit selling it or try to sell it for less money. It is free enterprise. Not all McDonald's in the U.S. sell for the same price.

Everything's like that. You want a pair of jeans, in the US it'll cost $25. Over here it'd cost £25, which is about $40. It never makes sense. But it's good value ;-)

It's down to cost of living, tax rates and local wages. Check out the price of a McDonalds in Switzerland if you think the UK is pricey!

Anyway, it doesn't matter where you go, McDonalds is still sh1t!
