One of the hardest things that we have to do is accept that those quirky parts of us that emerge now and then, really are our true self. The late Sheldon Kopp, psychologist, psychiatrist and philosopher, was sure that the way to mental health
is accepting the good and bad parts of the self and achieving integration through balancing the two. We are somewhere between saint and sinner
with shades of gray between. No one is either totally good or totally bad. It is the impossible striving for perfection that causes problems. We accept those bad parts but do not act on them. We accept the good parts without fussily trying to be perfect. So that is you gunning your engine like a madman in impatience. It is you grumbling at another homework assignment. These are the parts we try to change in ourselves because of the problems they can cause for everyone.

You are either being "fake," so to speak, or just doing something you wouldn't normally do (or vice versa). Maybe you were being yourself, and the other person just thought you were being fake and didn't understand. It's what you think, not what others think. If you care enough to think about it, though, maybe you should call the person up and say "hey, sorry, maybe you misunderstood..."

Hope it helps!

You're not being yourself if you find yourself doing something that you would never catch yourself doing but you're only doing it for acceptance.

Makes sense?

Find out what is this self and then you can see if you are being it or not.
