Not just Mars - there is also the matter of that NEO that is supposed to obliterate us in 2012. Who is getting sick of hearing about that one? Or how about the whole debate about the moon landings? That was also started right here on the good old World Wide Web!

People are lazy. They use technology at a whim, and if it isn't instant and easy it gets dropped.
Learning, research, questioning - these all take work and time. And people just are too lazy to bother anymore.
To learn you have to read, to read you need to take time and know how to read (and spell, God help us all with the state of spelling and grammar these days).
The kids have also made the assumption that if its on the Internet it must be true. For some reason, they just don't get that anyone can post anything (true, false, or completely wrong) on the Internet and NO ONE IS CHECKING.

That is so strange, I was watching T.V. today and I saw three specials on Mars. Weird. Anyway, people believe stuff on the Internet because it's probably the most sophisticated thing in the world.

First there is a great deal of very good information on the Internet about a lot of things; however, All mass email should be treated with a lot of suspicion. I'd ask the question as to why anyone bothers to send on mass emails?

A lot of people know very little science so they really have no idea what to question.

At least some of them are asking. There are probably twice or four times as many who have swallowed the lie and didn't have enough skepticism to ask. Bunging a question on Yahoo answers is a form of fact checking - though not a terribly good one.

Stephen Finkleberg wrote in the Fool's Gazette that the Gullibility Factor in human beings was directly proportional to the amount of fat retained within their brains, and the square of the amount of weight in Pounds that they were over weight.

A lot of folks will believe anything you tell them, or most the stuff they read. I was told that in 2020 a meteor will destroy the state of Michigan....it was supposively said by a scientist.
