could be learning to use his hands..could also be that he is starting to teeth...look at his gums they tend to look spotted white and swollen when the teeth start coming in..when he starts to push the bottle away try rubbing your finger on his gums see if this is what is bothering him

My son is four months and he does that sometimes too. Here are my guesses. Gas-when my son gets an upset belly he pushes the bottle away. Try burping him more often. Maybe a yeast infection(thrush) that can make their mouths sore. Look for white patches in his mouth or on his cheeks. Is he overtired when this happens? Did you switch his formula? Different formulas can taste really different to your baby-my son drinks either breastmilk or regular enfamil, we tried gentle ease and he wouldn't drink it. I wonder if this is an age thing because my son has done this a lot recently too, but I can't find anything wrong with him. Also if we feed him before he gets really hungry and frantic he seems to do better. If they fuss too much before they eat they can get gas. Good luck and I hope he does better-I know it is frustrating. If he doesn't improve I would call your doc.

Yes, he may have discovered his hands and that he can push the bottle away. But he may also be teething and every time he sucks on the bottle, his gums bother him. When baby teeth are erupting, they have to cut through the gums. That causes the gums to swell until the tooth cuts through, so consequently they hurt. If he is drooling a lot, that's sign that he is teething. You might want to give him something cool to chew on before you give him the bottle to sooth the swelling.

does he also arch his back while drinking? arching back, crying/freaking out while drinking milk are usually symptoms of acid reflux - it is usually accompanied with spitting up but can also take be in the form of silent reflux (where the milk comes to the throat but goes back down) - so you don't see him spitting out because it's happening internally.
just be sure that you keep him straight while feeding (gravity - so the milk doesn't come up) and make sure to keep him in a sitting position (car seat or swing) for atleast 30-40 minutes after he has had his milk. also remembere to burp properly.
and do talk to the pediatrician - she might advise some antacid (they usually don't have any side effects) to help him with this.
but just keep in mind, this is very normal with small babies and nothing to worry about - he'll outgrow it sooner than you know. all the best!

Let your pediatrician know what is going on. It sounds like your son could be having problems with acid reflux. I went through this with my daughter when she was about the same age. She was put on Zantac for several months, and the problem went away when she was able to sit upright by herself.

Acid reflux is a pretty common condition in babies these days. In order to reduce the risk of SIDS, parents are told to put their babies to bed on their backs. It has reduced the occurance of SIDS drastically. However, the incidence of acid reflux has gone up as a result.

is he still on a slow flow teat? maybe it's time to move to medium flow if he's getting frustrated at his milk being too slow. the first couple of times with new teat will be a bit of a shock for him so be ready to sit him up!
