I would say paper--think of all that couldn't have happened by now without it.
The Declaration of Independence
communication in the past (long distance)
paintings and sketches (other than on walls)
sheet music
learning would be a struggle without books--we'd all be ignorant fools (that still seems to happen to some though)

For me the answer is easy, the movable type printing press. Without, the world would still be in the dark ages. The printing press allowed for a public education system to be created cheaply allowing the lower class poor to gain an education. Without that education there would never been a middle class of merchants looking for new resources and finding them in the New World. There would never have been any concept of computers or the internet without the printing press. Illiteracy would be epidemic and the poor would have only two choices in life, farm land for a feudal lord or fight in the army. So be thankful that Gutenberg came up with the idea.
