i'm not only a freshmen in my high school marching band but i'm also a beginner among the freshmen and I know i'm the worst player in my clarinet section. But my parents have paid a lot of money for me to be enrolled in marching band camp and to buy a clarinet and such that I really really really don't want to become an alternate. It's not really about me or my pride, I really don't want to disappoint my parents after they've done so much to get me enrolled. All alternates really go in my marching band is go to the games on the same bus and all but sit in the stands and not play or march. My parents are expecting me to be out there on the field in the games and it's gotten me nervous/scared me to the point where I wake up crying every day because I'm frightened that that day will be the day the teacher will pull me out and tell me I'm gonna be an alternate.
I don't get how the system really works with alternates so if you could tell me, and how i could tell my parents if i'm namedone

Look girl, I dissappointed my parents by not being their little girly girl. I am sure you won't dissappoint them if you are an alternate. If they love you, they'll be proud of you no matter what happens, unlike my parents.

Show them the respect, do you best, take extra practice if you can and THEN you need to have a heart to heart talk with them what you would like to play or do. Its part of being mature. Just do it respectfully and be sure to thank them for the opportunity that they gave you. They might not have that opportunity that you have when they were young.
