I don't drink so I haven't a clue about wines but when I need to buy wine as a gift, I go to a dedicated wine store, and take advice from the staff there who seem very knowledgeable. I tell them what I want it for (i.e. to go with a meal or just for leisurely quaffing), any known taste preferences and approximately how much I wish to pay. They usually come up with a few suitable things to choose from and then it's just left to me to pick the one with the most attractive label!

There was one in the Subic Bay EM'S club called Midnight express.
Had a picture of a steam locomotive on the label.
