i have a girl ferret,
she has just come on heat
.i know that i should get her nuetered or mated. but both options are out at the moment.
She has just had serious surgery where she had to have a fair bit of her small intestine removed, because of the amount removed she wasn't expected to live and was in a critical condition for 4 days.
she survived and has just had her stitches removed .
the vet said that they will neuter her now but i don't want to put her through another operation so soon ,ijust got her home'
what i'm wondering has anyone had a female ferret that they didn't get mated or nuetered and was the ferret okay,or is there an alternative solution and is it safe.
i am happy to get her neutered in a couple of months when i feel it want stress her out to much. i do love her ,so whats your advice,

the reason ferrets either need to be mated or spayed is that the female ferret will cycle into and out of heat on a faster and faster basis. if she does not successfully mate this can lead to her developing leukemia.
her going through one heat without breeding is not a problem but don't leave her this way for long
your vet should be able to advise you more on your pets condition

There are some hormone shots that will bring her out of heat. You could also have her mated with a male that has had a vasectomy. These can be used as alternatives to spaying, but really aren't a permanent solution. Ask your veterinarian about other options. Females who are not mated stay in heat indefinitely run the risk of developing aplastic anemia. The estrogen levels in her body get so high that it damages the bone marrow. This can be fatal.

When a female ferret (Jill) comes into heat, it is important that she be bred. If she is not bred, her body will maintain a certain hormone level that will eventually cause heart failure.
It is very important that you follow your Veterinarian's advice and have her spayed soon, or she may die of heart disease/failure. I am not being a jerk, this is very important. Do a google search on ferrets, there are many websites that will verify this. This is one of the many reasons that the pet industry sells ferrets that are already spayed or neutered. A male ferret neutered will be a aggressive little terror, but I am not aware of health issues

The downside with unmated female ferrets is that the hormonal shift stresses can cause them to go cancerous. If your vet says they can spay her now, then trust them and let them do it.

One, two, or three heat cycles is all it takes for a ferret to get a dangerous cancer. They seem to be prone to it.

You should just get her spayed now. Spayed is the word used for females. Neutered is the word used for males. In all actuality, she won't remember and it will be getting it over with sooner rather than later.

Well you have one option, either breed her or she dies. Ferrets have to breed or they die. Which is why they need to be fixed. So the choice is your's. Get her in for the surgery or lose your ferret.

I consider that animal cruelty of you don't get her spayed. There are ferret rescues if you don't choose to spay her. Breeding her after surgery will obsolutly kill her, so the only option you have at this point will be to spay her. Get it done before you have what you already have invested in her. Do what is the right thing to do.
