Wow...you got some good replies on this one. I particularly liked that one suggesting that if the Aliens you saw were in Groupe 128, and they only needed 127 Groupes on Jupiter, then those you saw would surely be Extra. Har...Har...

The key to your question lies in the words Extra and Terre...which used together mean "not from Earth."
So if those Aliens were from Jupiter they would most certainly be Extra Terrestrials. I was wondering how they built anything that could fly on Jupiter though. Seems to me anything they started to build would sink below the surface...

Terrestrial comes from the Latin root Terra which means Earth. Anything that doesn't come from Earth is extra-terrestrial. That would include Jupiter.

You're thinking on the right track, realizing that "terra" can roughly translate to "ground." In this situation, though, you have to look at the entire word. "Extra" means (roughly) "outside of," and "terra" in this case refers to Earth as a planet, not earth as in dirt or ground. So extraterrestrial would translate to "outside of Earth" and therefor applies to anything from any other place in the universe.

It doesn't just apply to life, either. You could even refer to meteors that have crashed on Earth as extraterrestrial, because they came from somewhere other than this planet!

Yes, but we would be extra-gazials to them.
