Why is it perfectly alright to have scholarships designed for blacks only, but it is considered racist to have scholarships for whites only? Note: there are a lot of academic settings in urban areas where whites are the minority.

It is because blacks were oppressed for nearly 300 years in this country and we whites need to address the wrongs. Whites, on the other hand, have not been oppressed.

That being said -- there are some scholarships that are mainly available for whites. One of my students at Wharton had an Armenian-American scholarship. I know of Italian-American and Irish-American scholarships as well.

There are minority scholarships for whites if they attend majority black schools. I know someone who got just that.

Why are you only looking for minority scholarships? There are plenty other ones out there for everyone. They have any kind of scholarship you can imagine. T

Although they have lots of minority scholarships for blacks, I don't accept them. They usually have lower qualifications to get the scholarship money like the same type of scholarship for blacks but with lower GPA requirements. I've seen it before. I see that as saying minorities cannot do any better. In my opinion, that is more racism than anything. It's about the principle of the thing.

I wish you luck!!!

Yes, I agree. Having a scholarship for a particular race is racism. What about scholarships because you are an American with high achievement? Or you've come from a low SES? Why base it on race, right? Political correctness has gone overboard!

Edited: I agree with Bitter Bats 100%. Also, for the poster who thinks there's so much racism: if there is so much racism in colleges/university, why do Asians (both Americans and foreign-born) get into college and finish college the same, or in some cases, slightly higher rate than whites? Let's stop playing the victim and race card.

I completly agree with this. I go to a school where we have 2000 students and only 80 or so of them are white, me included. I wrote a speech on how their should either be special scholarships for all races or preferably, just scholarships based strictly on the finacial status of the person. Most people in my class thought I was being racist by doing that.

I myself come from a single parent family where my mom makes just enough to pay for what we need to survive. I find it extremely unfair that my school, being mainly filled with minorities, always post scholarships that just blacks or hispanics can apply for. It's really not fair and I hate it. It only enforces racism.

Edit:
For another answerer who said blacks were oppressed for 300 years, well then shouldn't you get rid of racism altogether rather than add to it by making special scholarships for certain ethnics? Also, what about whites who were from parts of Europe who came here after the Civil War? Should people from a non-Christian religion be given special rights? They were oppressed for centuries. What about homosexuals? They're still oppressed.

It's silly that financial aid and scholarships should be based on anything other than grades and the financial situation of the student.

I don't really know why racism works the way it does, but I recieved an Irish-American scholarship a few years ago, and while that's technically not "whites only", it might as well be. All minority groups are represented to some extent.
