I turned my laptop on this morning and the touch pad didn't respond. I ended up hooking up a mouse through the usb port on my laptop and i went to the control panel to the mouse section and it said nothing was wrong. How do i fix this. i need my laptop for school and my mom needs the mouse back for work.

laptop is sony vaio windows xp. i got it a year and a half ago and i sent it to the manufacturer a month ago for something else and it came back in perfect condition. this problem has only been going on a day and i must have shut down and restarted my laptop at least 10 times.

Shut all the way down and do a cold-boot.
Your touch pad should respond unless there is something else you're not telling us.

this is usually an indication of your touch pad going or gone, best idea is to get a blue-tooth mouse so you are still wireless and the mouse and blue-tooth adapter fit nicely in a laptop case and most sont cost a whole bunch so good deal and easier to use than touchpad

This is strange since most mouses are plug and play, however if a disk came with your mouse, I would reinstall it and restart the computer. Otherwise, I would only suggest using someone else's mouse and see if theirs works on your system, or buying another one.

I agree with Moe. depending on the function keys, if different or not.
Also make sure you dont have any static electricity in you (sounds odd, i hope you know what I mean) somtimes that can interfere with the pad.
I also would say uninstall - reboot - install - reboot and see what happens!!

Press the gray FN on your keyboard, then on F9. This button disables/enables the touch pad if that didn't work well then, I think its broken.
