Hi~
I have a 10 gallon tank with 2 cherry barbs and 2 corydoras catfish. I am wanting to get more fish. My parents would only let me get 2 fish at a time. I wanted to get 2 more cherry barbs but they are out of stock and so are the corydoras catfish (all species). I wanted them to be in a school. Do you have any suggestiong for me? I have a ten gallon tank and 2 cherry barbs and 2 cories. I would like more fish but the fish i wanted weren't in stock.
What kind of fish would be good and suitable for a 10 gallon tank and fish as listed above?
Only two.
Thank you,
Christian Coleman

I meant to say they don't sell them anymore in my local store. I don't really want anything like livebearers.

Although you're having difficulties, your still better off trying to stick with the cherry barbs and cories because they do better in larger schools. I would recommend calling around to see what other stores are carrying them and how far away they are. Also, since your local store is no longer carrying them, ask them directly who still does. Any reputable shop will at least give you some ideas of where to check. There are ways to safely transport them longer distances if it will take you longer to get home from a different store.

Those are all very docile community fish, so be sure you stay within that group. I would suggest platys. They come in many colors, breed easily, and are very peaceful. They will also school. You could try some other barbs, like gold barbs. They would probably school with your others. Just be sure you ask about how aggressive they are. You do not want tiger barbs since they are so aggressive. The employees at the local pet store should be able to suggest something for you. Remember that a 10 gallon tank will be full once you get 10-12 fish at the most.

Cherry Barbs are great in schools. You should get 2 more. Ask the pet shop manager when he/she gets fish in. Ask if they will be getting any Cherry bars or if they will get some for you. If they want your business they will do this for you. Cory also live in schools in the wild, get one more of them. I would suggest maybe four or five Tiger barbs and that should be enough for now, you don't want to overload the tank.

Don't get Tiger Barbs. You really should try your best to get a couple more Cherry Barbs. If you can't get any Cherry Barbs then the next best choice is other peaceful Barbs like Checker Barbs or Five Banded Barbs.

If they don't sell them at your local store, find a different place to get them! I find it very difficult to believe that a fish store would stop carrying Cories, so I would have to question your reliablity. They will not school with another fish just because you can't get what they need. If you cannot meet a fish's requirements, then give it away! To get a fish and not take care of it properly is irresponsible fish keeping. I would also talk to your parents and tell them that it is not in the fishes' best interest for you to get them 2 at a time. Email me if you have any other questions.

Both are schooling fish, so I suggest you wait until they get some in stock. Female bettas are good with these species and add color to the tank. Livebearers (platies, guppies, or swordtails) and buenos aires or black skirt tetras are good.

Either wait until you can add to one of the other species, or I would suggest 2 male guppies. Getting a pair would only result in babies that would overcrowd your tank and two males will add a nice splash of color to your tank.
