The stock market is a huge group of people buying and selling shares in public companies.

Major companies have millions of small "partners" who own shares of the companies , called stock .
The stock market exchanges ( in the US they are the NYSE , NASDAQ and AMEX ) are where people buy and sell their shares in those companies .
Check Yahoo finance to follow the market and I suggest looking at the 'most active' link which shows which stocks are having the most buying & selling that day .
