i have taken care of fish as pets without an air pump before and nothing bad happened really besides algie growing but i let my little pleco do it thing and clean it up at times. but despite the fact, you dont really need an air pump do you? fish can still live and survive without air pumps right? people have air pumps to keep the water moving so there wouldnt be anyalgie if thats how you spell it but also i have heard its to have oxygen in the water as well, but if my fish wants water, it would know to go up to the surface of the water right?

Success in an aquarium without a filter or air pump is possible, but unusual. There are many potential pitfalls in trying this, the least of which is unsightly algae problems.

If at all possible, provide your fish with an inexpensive power filter.

Fish Tank Cleaning Pump

No of direction no longer! the better intensity the extra suited. Air pumps supply oxygen to fish, and that's ideal to offer as much as attainable. I even have had a 50 gallon pump in my 20 gallon tank for 2 years and my fish are effective. believe me, there is not any such situation as too huge of an air pump.

IF you have anything as big as a pleco, then the filter in your tank will do all the work. All fish need a filter, not an air pump really. Bettas are OK without filters, but better with them since their water gets dirty fast.
PS, goldfish DO NOT breath at the top of the water, and they need filtration more than any other fish.

Yes, Tropical fish need oxygenated water.
I think, the best thing for any fish, is if a cleaning filter is used. The bubbles will put oxygen in the water AND clean it! I think my goldfish and betta's are much happier that I also added a air stone. Just a slow flow from the air stone is nice for them. Also makes the surroundings more interesting.
In other words, If it needs air...Give it Air! The algae you have is from the sun. Use UV lights, they are great for the fish.

Depends on the size of the tank, but the reason for air pumps is to keep the water aerated (air in it), Along with controlling and filtering out the algae, which depletes the water of the oxygen, the air filter/air pump is needed for tropical fish. Gold fish don't need one, if kept in a small bowl.

Oxygen enters water only at the surface. Bubbles each have a small round surface area that allows oxygen exchange into the water. A filter removes both debris and chemical toxins. Few fish can actually breath air at the surface of the water.

In a tank yes you need air pump of some kind...A fish bowl you can get away with out it....Your fish aren’t smart enough to surface...and its not really surfacing that they need...they don't breath like us they take in the water but need oxygen in the water to keep the going longer and healthy

What type of fish have you got? If they're ornamental (like mine) then some ppl don't use a pump at all, for fear of damaging their delicate fins. If you do water changes regularly, you should not need to use an air pump at all. But just keep an eye on them at first and if they appear to be gasping, then I'd reinstate the pump. Their wellbeing comes first, after all!

the air pump is essential not only for oxygenating the water but it is used to filter the water (if you're using and undergravel filter)
