Thomas Hobbes used to say "homo homini lupus" - Latin for "Man is a wolf to Men".
I think it explains quite well how a part of human nature inlcudes desire to take over their fellow man.
The fundamental reason for that is as usual the animalistic survival of the species - more power = better survival chances.
You can also see it as a distorted way of progress, the desire to conquer something new, which in its good sense promotes development and progress of mankind, but has the side effect of causing prevarication and power-grab.

Greed, avarice and lying to each and everyone on the planet has become the mainstay of civilization at this time or era. I think the only time it will change is if what we know of civilization goes down the tubes and the survivors who start a new civilization learn from the mistakes of the past. But, in my opinion, this is about the third civilization that has started over and we haven't learned anything from the past. So maybe human beings will not be around much longer. Who knows?

Luxury or wealth are words whose value is relativistic to every other value. Greed is a kind of anti social activity, or a perceived anti social activity given the question for the truth in its accusation or word use, perpetuated in anxiety for the future in social conditions that do not provide security nor assurance (group versus group or when human universality as a single fidelity or identity can not subsist in exclusive moral norms).
The Will is positive, the Judgment is negative.

Primeval survival was based on need, not greed. What do you think happened as we evolved?
What you describe is NOT animalistic survival of the species, as some assume. "Power" as in, I'm the stronger male, was instinct for procreation. Conquer & control were not part of this equation.
No further comment, & I hope people sincerely ask themselves what "logical" reasons there might be for what we have become.

As long as there is gold or oil, there will be someone who wants to exploit it, keep most of it for themselves and get someone else to do the dirty work for them in order to get it.
