I live in Colorado Springs and used to live in Estes Park, the entrance to RMNP, and I really think you and your family will enjoy RMNP more! Lots more wildlife and things to see. Very beautiful. Pikes Peak is cool but all you really do is drive up and down.
Both roads are beautiful- the roads won't be closed. I hope you enjoy your trip!

I think Rocky Mountain National Park is better and by the way, they do not close in October. They are open year-round. Old Fall River Road and Trail Ridge Road do get closed for the winter because of snow but the park itself,(and other roads), remain open. I know because I've been there during each season including winter. Whatever you decide, have fun :-).

Pikes Peak is perfectly nice. RMNP is far more varied and spectacular.
Old Fall River Road will be closed to cars in October. It's only open July 4 - Labor Day.
Trail Ridge may be closed by early snowstorms, but most likely will be open. It will be cold up high.

I think RMNP will be closed in October. I believe they usually close the park after labor day because of snow storms. Both parks are a site to see, but I prefer the RMNP because you see more animals, the views are incredible from Trail Ridge Rd. and the towns of Estes Park and Grand Lake are definitely worth checking out. Both are very cute mountain towns that are much more low key than a Vail.

See both, the Colorado springs is only an hour south of Denver. Drive through The Garden of the Gods and walk around Manatou Springs and take the Cog railway to the top of Pikes peak.

Pikes Peak. totally. it has the most beautiful view. but, there are a few exceptions. It always storms at three pm, so you have to get there really early to get off the mountain before it storms. and always go with someone else.

I enjoyed Pikes Peak, although I only went once. The elevation was too much for me. *sigh*
