where I do not feel safe or comfortable? If my job requires that I travel to Manhattan, should they have budgeted enough to cover me staying in reasonable hotels?

Absolutely! They shouldn't expect you to stay in flea bag hotels that among other things aren't safe!

There are many variables.
* Are you an employee or a private contractor?
** If an employee you should be on an expense account that reimburses you for cost of lodging, at whavever rate the employer is willing to pay ... you could negotiate that they pay for the unsafe place, and you pay the extra cost of a safer place
*** For example ... the company paid $ 45.00 a nite for me to stay at a low budget motel in Indiana ... down the street for $ 15.00 more a nite there was another motel, which had a good restaurant with room service (the cheaper motetl just had ice buckets and vending machines), indoor swimming pool, and other amenities, like air conditioning that really worked ... I paid the extra $ 15.00 a nite to stay at the nicer motel. I was only in the motel to sleep, and rest between bouts of work, but the extra $ 15,00 meant I got better quality rest
** if private contractor, they can't dictate anything, but then you pay full cost
* the company may have a standard expense policy ... so much per mile, so much for entertainment, so much for lodging ... that fails to take into consideration special needs of some communities ... you could dispute that the policy needs to be amended due to situation in a particular community ... be prepared to provide credible statistics

It is. Although you'd be surprised at what you get in Manhattan for $300. Remember too, NYC is the safest large city in the US and pretty much anything below 96th st. is safe and most above it as well.

I agree with SWALLOWU-R SOUL's answer. And if you don't think your employer is giving you enough money for travel, you should quit. Just like you'd quit if your employer wasn't giving you enough money as a salary.
