For instance, I have an ad on petclassifieds and there are ads that others have placed that say, "no scammers please" or "scammers dont reply". How would I know if I am being contacted by a scammer, and what exactly is a scammer? (Esp. when it comes to a pet)

Ask prospective puppy buyers for both personal and vet references.

Scammers want free pets to sell to research labs, or for using as dog fighting fodder (killing animals to train the dogs) or are looking for puppies, kittens and rabbits for snake food. There's also the Hmong and Asian older adults who like to eat dog (yes, they get them from newspaper ads, or were 'adopting' them from the shelter....our humane society put the price of dogs up over $100 for this sole reason).

Be extremely cautious about who you're placing your pet with.

Yikes. When you put ads on those sites you could get ANYONE. I mean, there could be nice people, too, but you never know. I guess if it were me I'd ask a LOT of questions. I'm sure you'll be intelligent enough to know if they're being pushy, trying to rush, don't wanna know much about the animal and get annoyed with you asking questions.
