Many of the large breed snakes such as Pythons eat rabbits in the Wild the thing is that if you want to feed a live rabbit it is best to render the rabbit unconscious before feeding. This is what is done in the Zoos. Believe me you do not want to hear the sounds that come from a rabbit as it is being stalked. It is the most awful and pitiful sound. The rabbit will literally scream. I cannot see it being against the law in California unless your town might have some sort of city ordinance which seems highly unlikely. Rabbits that are sold in Pet Stores are meant to be sold as pets.. not food. There are companies that breed rabbits strictly as a food source. You can find these places by doing some looking online.

"My friend says that you can feed rabbits live rats"

O.o Uh....did you mis-type there, honey? Or is your friend really really stupid?

Yes. It's perfectly legal to feed live animals to snakes.

I myself prefer feeding thawed rodents only. Despite what people say, any snake can be convinced to do so. My rescue ball python only ate live prey before I got him. Now he eats thawed.

I accept the fact perfectly that snakes are carnivores and will kill and eat other animals, but don't like the idea of putting a live rodent in my snake's tank where it really doesn't have a chance in hell (in the wild there's always the possibility of escape) Also, live prey can seriously injure (sometimes proving fatal) the pet snake. I find most people who feed live prey do it for their own entertainment, which is just sick.

It is legal but it's not safe. Rabbits can do a lot of damage to a snake. Frozen/thawed is always the best was to feed. Safer for you, and the snake. Rabbits bought in bulk frozen are a whole lot cheaper than buying them from the petstore anyway.

Yes, it's perfectly legal in the U.S. Feeding rabbits is legal, but feeding your snake a cat would be illegal. It's illegal in England to feed anytihng alive to another animal.

To the people recommending feeding mice instead of rabbits, are you going to feed thirty mice at a time to a 10 foot python instead of one rabbit? Don't buy a large breed of snake if you're not willing to give it a proper diet.

*I know of reptile dealers here in California that have big snakes and they feed rabbits to the ones they have so I would say it's ok. This place does go by the laws in California I've known them for 6 years now.

For the most part I believe it is legal, however if you go to the pet stores to get them, most have you sign an agreement that you will care for them.. and one of the clauses is that it is not going to be used as a "feeder" animal. I don't think they'd do anything, but IF they were to find out you fed the animal to a snake they could sue you for breach of contract.. Unlikely scenario.. but possible..

It is legal in Virginia, in California I'm not so sure. But you could maybe ask a police officer, or the owner of a pet store wuold know.

As long as it is for feeding and not cruelty it is fine. You can also feed them mice. If you bought it what can they do. It's like saying you can't eat meat from a cow.

try mice instead and you can look up california laws regarding that issue or go to a pet store and ask an employee.
