can u play guitar chords any were on the neck, like cud u play D on like the 12th fret in the same positon and would it still be called D??

There are two different ways to form chords. Open or first position chords are played at the far end of the neck and incorporate open strings. Bar chords are formed by using closed strings only and deadening the unwanted strings. Bar chords can be played anywhere on the neck open chords must be played only in the first position unless a capo is used.

Using bar chords you have several different ways to play the same chord depending on which fingering you choose. There are basically three different bar chord "forms" the E-form, the U-form and the C-form. Any one of these forms can play any major chord depending on where on the neck(which fret) it is employed.

Sorry, but no! Most of the time you have to play the D with the root on the 2nd fret. If it's on like the 12th fret it could either be called a different chord or just a tab/riff.

if ur talking about using a capo then all the chord positions are relative to the capo, its kinda like using bar chords.ex e chord bared at the 5th is an a chord

of coarse it wont be called because D is located in 2nd fret,the chord name will definitely change!
