Most of the major F-ups in our government seem to be career politicians.

Should we place hard and fast limits on political careers and just how should we configure these limits if any?

Career politicians are a bad thing to me, its obvious many of them have lost touch with reality back home. (both sides mind you). However placing term limits on them is going to be nearly impossible (since they'd have to do it). Our constitution was made incredibly hard to change on purpose, and so changing it to call for term limits will be hard and they will fight it tooth and nail. Just don't vote for incumbents anymore....join the crowd that wants to vote them out.

Remember in 1992 when H. Ross Perot claimed he would not be a 'career politician'?? Virtually every Republicrat running for office jumped on the bandwagon and claimed NOT to be 'career politicians'.
When Perot espoused 'family values', virtually every candidate mimicked Perot's lead and touted how they, too, believed in 'family values'.
You're right: these copycat 'career' politicians' need to be reigned in so that they serve their country just as soldiers do: sign up for a few years and then go back home to a real job.
You 'configure' term limits by sponsoring a national referendum and letting voters decide the issue. Of course, the 'powers-that-be' will never allow that until there's a 'people's revolution' that absolutely forces the issue - most likely when citizens finally have had enough and exercise their Constitutional right "to keep and bear arms" against an oppressive and tyrannical government. -RKO- 08/26/07

I've never understood how the president and most governors have term the other politicians don't. Term limits would probably stop some of the nonsense that goes on in Washington

there should be a term limit for all elected politicians. And also the benefits after leaving should be cut to the bone. Life time salary should be done away with like other businesses do.

And it would help if the same people would stop re electing people like Ted Kennedy.

no.. or yes... the idiots keep electing them... like Ted Kennedy or Robert Byrd for example.... funny how Congress past an Amendment to the Constitution to limit the terms of the President... but, in their infinite wisdom, left their own terms as is.... just a thought.

No, there shouldn't. They just learn everything they need to know about how to trick the people. Yes, we need to have limits, but I am not sure what the limit should be. Definitely, they should be retired by twenty years if they're not gone already.
