Me and my friend got in an arguement on whether Wayne's an Emcees, or a rapper. I said he's obviously a rapper, he said he's an Mc, what is he???

Rapper: Some body, who rhymes about himself, How much bling he has, how fresh he is, mostly raps about himself. Example Young Joc

Mc: Somebody who speaks for the community, Who's talking about issues going on right now, rhymes about stuff average people can relate to. Example: Talib Kweli

Lil Wayne is a rapper.........i know you have your definition of a rapper & an MC, so i figured i would elaborate on the differences between a rapper and a MC:

-a MC never bites
-MC's have respect for the old school
-MC's are politically and socially aware and they can incorporate that into their lyrics
-MC's dont need alot of promotional and marketing hype to be admired or considered great
-A MC doesnt have to get too personal to win a battle
.......on the other hand
-Rappers often bite off of those who came before them
-Rappers dont respect the old school (rappers who came before them)
-Rappers are only about getting paid
-Rappers are politically and socially unaware..the result-ignorant lyrics
-Rappers need alot of video and marketing hype to be recognized
-Rappers cant battle without getting personal

I would say he's a rapper who occasionally takes on the persona of an emcee. Like that song he made about New Orleans & Katrina. But I think emcees are just rhymers who concentrate on their skill level 1st, then image & everything else 2nd or comes 3rd. But it has grey areas. For exp. Chuck D was a socially aware rapper, but was he as skilled as Kweli? Jay-Z is a very skilled rapper but does he fit "your" idea of what a emcee is? With 90% of his songs, I would say NO. But skill-wise Wayne has improved a lot. Once he's secure enough to rap more often about important issues, with out fear that people might label him a "conscious" rapper "like Common or Kweli"-oh my gawd no!!!" then he'll be a more complete artist. Then he'll fit both our definitions of what a MC is.

He is without a doubt a rapper, What record label does he support? Cash Money Millionares, I think that is all the evidence u need that he is a rapper.

I think lil wayne is both. If you listen to some of his mixtapes, he sounds more like an MC then a rapper. yet on some of his albums he is a rapper. But honeslty if u listen to lil wayne, he steps up his game when he is on tracks with bigger artest. Exam: we takin ova, I'm with whateva, Suck it or not, Make it work for ya. He has that drive to be the best when he is on the track with the best.

He's a rapper...I've never heard anybody call him an MC. There's nothing wrong with a rapper, but I like more MC's than rappers.

Lil' Wayne is a rapper.
I think KRS One said it right--- "Rappers spit rhymes that are mostly illegal, Mc's spit rhymes to up left their people."

For future reference, from our friend KRS-One...
"Rappers spit rhymes that are mostly illegal, MCs spit rhymes to uplift they people"... not sure where Lil' Wayne falls. He really doesn't deserve either one, he's terrible.
