Mesopotamia, the land between the Tigris and Euphrates Rivers in what is now Iraq is one of the two oldest civilizations in the world. The other is Egypt. In these two ancient cultures history begins because this is where literacy begins. This separates history from prehistory. Here in Mesopotamia writing begins with "cuneiform" writing on clay tablets probably to keep records and for inventory. This was probably the first system of writing. Here agriculture begins and probably the first towns. Many of the stories in the Bible like the story of "Noah and the Flood" have their precendent in the "Epic of Gilgamesh. Abraham, a native of the Babylonian town of Ur in Mesopotamia, spoke to God here. He is considered the first Jew. Judaism, Christianity, and Islam hark back to Abraham as the first prophet. I hope that this has been a help to you.

Perhaps their greatest contribution which is very much part of our everyday life is the concept of time. The Babylonians were the first to introduce that the day be divided into 24 hours, each hour into 60 minutes, and each minute into 60 seconds. Equally significant is the introduction and use of the Zodiac or Horoscope, which we still use today.
